Another month full of fun things for consumption. Here’s what I’ve been digging into aside from 90-minute movies this month.
What I’ve Been Reading…
I’ve been reading some “easy” light-hearted books that I’ve picked up at our community library that some kind neighbors maintain. It’s basically a great big long table by one of our parks where you can leave your old books and pick up new ones. The books I’ve grabbed have been a nice brain break, but they’re nothing to write home about. So instead of a book, I’m recommending another Substack:
Harris is a pop culture writer known primarily for pieces in Vulture. Her weekly round-ups of all things culture bring me the deepest joy. From hysterical questioning of Jack Harlow to deep dives into celebrity Twitter, I really love and enjoy her unique voice and I am always laughing.
What I’ve Been Watching…
What started as a pity watch for Rob McElhenney (who was pitching this thing heavily on the Always Sunny podcast) turned into a reasonable binge allowing me to finish season 1 and most of season 2 this month. Mythic Quest is a workplace comedy set in the studio of a multiplayer online roleplaying game. Yeah — didn’t seem to be my thing either. I stuck around just long enough to be blown away by Season 1, Episode 5 which tells a completely different (but related) story, in a new manner of storytelling, with a fresh voice. Something they do again in Season 2. These strange but enjoyable choices have kept me around even though I am not yet super emotionally attached to the characters. You can find it on Apple TV.
What I’ve Been Eating…
I know that plant-based, gluten-free, snackable cookie dough sounds depressing but DEUX is so good I had to stop buying it for a month because I couldn’t go a day without it. It’s really that good and I wish I was kidding. There is a range of flavors — I love the Brownie — and you can either eat them raw from the jar or be boring and make cookies. I have yet to make it to the cookie portion of my relationship with DEUX. This may be less exciting for people who can eat whatever they want — but for a Celiac (like me) this is heaven on earth.
What I’ve Been Drinking…
New category alert! Like yes hello I am a lush, better just own up to it.
Tanqueray’s new Sevilla Orange gin is heavenly. I was a little bit scared that I’d get hurt again when I pulled this one off the shelf after being left disappointed by Empress 1908 (10/10 for the purple color, 5/10 for flavor). But I should have trusted Tanqueray to know what they were doing. The light citrus notes of this gin require little to be mixed with it and I’ve been enjoying it with soda water. That’s it.
What I’m Listening to…
During the pandemic, I somehow went from being a fairly neutral true crime fan to being a full-out addict. As such, I binged the entire season of CounterClock that was just released. This season is the investigation of the 2003 death of 17-year-old John Welles in Arcadia, Florida. This is a little-known case outside of the area it took place in, so it was very interesting to get 15 whole episodes dedicated to it. Also, the reporter, Delia D’Ambra, gets into some wild situations with suspects.
That’s it! By the time you’re reading this, I’ll be somewhere in the Adriatic Sea.
