T90MM - April Round-Up
"Garbage is just a fort you haven’t built yet, Baby." -Rick, from Human Resources
I definitely don’t want to sound like someone you run into at the (virtual) water cooler but — geez, April went by in a flash. I am going to chalk that up to the fact that it was bitterly cold and felt just like March… making it hard to distinguish. But the flowers are finally blooming and the sun is peeking out when she feels like it (cranky bitch) so we’re on our way to warmer weather and baseball games it seems. Here’s the April round-up. As always, images are linked to where you can find my obsessions/suggestions.
What I’ve been reading…
I picked this one up from our neighborhood book exchange on a total whim. I didn’t know until this very moment as I looked up the book cover that it was made into a movie last year starring Tom Holland and directed by the Russo brothers. AKA the Marvel guys. *sigh* Even in my downtime I can’t escape the movies! I guess I’ll have to give the picture a go and report back. The book is excellent. It’s difficult to read at times —depictions of war and addiction— but worth it if you’re feeling up to the task. Cherry follows Nico as he drops out of college, heads to Iraq, and returns with PTSD trying to find his path while navigating his relationship with his great love, Emily.
What I’ve been watching…
I don’t cry very often. (Yes, it’s a problem! I’m sort of working on it.) So believe me when I say I sobbed through Episode 9 of this show. Sobbed! I was feeling real feelings. Human Resources is a spin-off of Big Mouth which tells the tale of middle school students going through puberty. Their feelings and emotions are personified through monsters and creatures (hormone monsters, anxiety mosquitos, depression kitties etc.) that only the kids can see. Human Resources takes it a step further and follows the creature’s daily lives as they deal with their adult clients and their added emotions (love bugs, logic rocks, addiction angels, ambition gremlins). Aside from the cast being absolutely STACKED (seriously, look it up, because I am not going to list 30 actors here), the show is really funny and also really poignant. Remember: I CRIED.
What I’ve been eating…
I think for some reason people have this image of me sitting around eating salads all day because I’m gluten-free but that’s all a lie. I fucking love junk food. The spicier the better. I recently made my father add me to his BJ’s membership so I can walk over to my local one and buy stuff in bulk— like tuna, batteries, protein bars, you know what I mean. I discovered this dip on my first trip. I was really hungry and was just throwing anything that looked good in the cart. And this sucker looked good. And guess what.. it IS good. Case closed. Find it.
What I’ve been enjoying…
Yoga is back in my life. Yoga for me is like walking or cooking for some people. Like I know it’s so good for me physically and mentally. I know I feel my best when I go. But I spend a lot of time just avoiding it because it challenges me a little bit. It asks a lot of me. I resist the shit out of it. But if I am being honest I have been uncontrollably anxious this month and having a rough time sleeping, so weekly yoga is back in an effort to calm my nervous system down and get back to my body. Here’s hoping!
What I’ve been listening to…
The Euphoria soundtrack. This is a little weird since I still have not yet finished season one. I don’t know, truthfully, how y’all binged this shit a couple of years ago. These episodes spike my heart rate! (No wonder I am so anxious this month. I’m reading a book about the Iraq war and watching Euphoria. My god!) But anyway… the soundtrack is really good for a moody walk or a moody subway ride when you want to feel like a sad yet bad bitch.
